As most of you know, I have been studying for my Certified Community Action Professional Test and one of the persons of interest in these studies is Sargent Shriver. Shriver is commonly referred to as the father of Community Action. On May 22, 1994, Sargent Shriver gave an address at Yale College Class Day. During his remarks, he gave this call to action:
“Break your mirrors! Yes indeed -- shatter the glass. In our society that is so self-absorbed, begin to look less at yourself and more at each other. Learn more about the face of your neighbor and less about your own.”
“Break your mirrors” is a striking metaphor that captures the distinct approach to peacemaking and social innovation that defined Sargent Shriver's career. Sarge identified the spiritual values of compassion and service as the key to peacemaking and social innovation. To practice “breaking your mirrors” is to practice the spiritual values of compassion and service in an active, intentional way.
As I read this, I couldn't help but think of the life and example of Christ. Jesus Christ came as the example of love and servitude that all of us should exhibit each and every day. Mark 10:44-45 "44And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. 45For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many." As Jesus came first as a servant to show the servants heart, we too must "Break our Mirrors" and focus more on others rather than ourselves.

In our daily devotional we need to help others and set an example of what life is like trusting in God.
